Ruïnekerk - Church

Ruïnekerk - 1

The Ruïnekerk in Bergen, located in the heart of this charming artist village in North Holland, is one of the most iconic and historic buildings in the region. The church’s history dates back to the 12th century and is closely intertwined with the development of Bergen itself.

A Church with a Turbulent Past

Around the year 1100, a chapel stood where the Ruïnekerk now rises. It was elevated to a parish church around 1140 and built with tuff stone. In the 15th century, it was replaced by a larger brick church: the impressive St Peter and Paul Church, completed around 1420.

During the Eighty Years' War, most of the church was destroyed by fire. Only the choir survived and has been carefully restored over the centuries. What remains is the striking Ruïnekerk, where the medieval past is still tangibly present.
